Marvel Masterworks: Sub-Mariner, Vol. 1
Published in Hardcover by Marvel Books (April, 2002)
Authors: Stan Lee and Bill Everett
Average review score:

Probably the only really good Sub-Mariner stories
This is truly the good stuff from the Silver-Age. By the time Sub-Mariner got his own comic, the stories had degraded to mush. But this collection of stories is a very good read. The opening plotline of Sub-Mariner's "quest" for the Trident of Neptune is the best of the bunch. Sub-Mariner was not this good in the 1940s and John Byrne's version in the 1990s was not this good. If only Marvel would issue the Incredible Hulk in a Masterworks Edition featuring the Tales to Astonish stories. What a bargain the kids of the 1960s got with Tales to Astonish! This is a must buy in the Masterworks collection.

One of the Best Marvel Masterworks
WOW! I love this book! Back in the early seventies I came across a giant Sub-Mariner special which featured the first issues of Prince Namor from Tales to Astonish. I was in awe of Gene Colan's (Adam Austin) art. Buying this Marvel Masterworks edition reminded me how much of an influence it was on my own work. Stan Lee's stories are full of grandeur and excitement. Prince Namor, The Sub-Mariner wasn't an easy character to like but once you got use to his regal manner you were hooked into his under seas adventures. Jack Kirby and Bill Everett (Namor's creator) show up later in the series on art chores. However it's Gene Colan's amazing rendition of life under water that makes this strip work as well as it did. I seem to recall that Gene wasn't very fond of the work he did on Namor. The book suffers only in it's reproduction. The film negatives used seem very thin and fail to capture Vince Colletta's finer ink lines. The coloring, though great, is too harsh on the glossy stock Marvel seems insistent on using. A matte surface would really do justice to the work. For those of you who missed out on these tales, buy this book. Stan Lee's revival of Prince Namor is legendary.

Masquerade Journey
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (01 February, 2000)
Author: Miriam Lee
Average review score:

Exciting Page-Turner!
I read Miriam Lee's last book, Deadly Probe, & enjoyed it a lot! This book has all the same elements, intrigue, romance, suspense & surprising plot twists. I had trouble putting it down, and though I'm a slow reader, I finished it in only two days. I recommend this suspense book to anyone who likes mystery or romance. And, if you like them combined, you're in for a fun treat! Can't wait for Ms. Lee's next book. Mary Higgins Clark, look out!

Gripping who-done-it on cruise ship
Combining a cunning scenario of a vacation cruise and numerous characters, Miriam Lee has given us a page-turner you end up unable to put down. Or let me put it this way, I was so eager to find out what was going to happen next, I took the book with me on a morning walk and ended up slamming into a lightpole! The ending in particular had me grappling with WHO DO I CHOOSE as the culprit? I chose wrong, to my surprise, and this makes MASQUERADE JOURNEY a book that will stay with me. No more lightpoles, though.

Master Paintings in the Art Institute of Chicago
Published in Hardcover by Art Institute of Chicago Museum (November, 1988)
Authors: James N. Wood, New York Graphic Society, Katharine C. Lee, and Art Institute Of Chicago
Average review score:

An outstanding introduction to the history of art in general
The Art Institute of Chicago houses a world-renown collection of artwork that spans the complete and diverse spectrum of six centuries of painting. Now in a revised and expanded second edition, Master Paintings In The Art Institute Of Chicago organizes and showcases 149 major paintings (like the Insitute itself) into European, American, and Twentieth-Century categories. This outstanding introduction to the history of art in general, and the Art Insitute of Chicago's impressive collection in particular, would grace any personal, academic, or community library artbook collection.

Take the collection to your home
This is a great coffee table book that includes many important paintings of Art Institute of Chicago. All the images are in color, and the story of each painting and the artist is given. Each painting is described on a single page, and therefore the pictures are sufficiently large and detailed. The book starts with 15th century religious paintings, and progresses to include well known impressionist paintings such as Seurat's Sunday on La Grande Jatte and Renoir's Two sisters. It also has a section on 20th century paintings. Not a substitute to seeing the actual works, but it is close...

Mavericks in the Workplace: Harnessing the Genius of American Workers
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (June, 1999)
Author: William G. Lee
Average review score:

"what makes us tick"
"With everybody going on and on about technology these days, Lee's focus on the social aspects of leadership and organizations is a welcome relief. His argument -- that much of the blather that's been written about leadership is simply out of touch with our own culture --- is a great insight, and convincingly argued. I'm fascinated by history, so his use of formative events in American history to provide insight into our culture -- into "what

makes us tick" as he puts it -- was my cup of tea. His chapter on leadership, using the American founding fathers as a model -- and they were quite different from the "transformational leader" model everyone touts today -- was fascinating. He gets a little repetitive in places, and sometimes "dumbs it down" a bit too much -- but this one gets 5 stars from me."

Intriging perspective on improving employee effectivness
Mr Lee utilizes a unique approach for corporations that are truly interested in more effectively utilizing one of their most critical assets: their employees. This book draws interesting parallels between true 'American Ingenuity' as displayed by early americans with methods that corporations can/should utilize to harness those traits in within todays' workforce. I particularly enjoyed the historical reflections and discussions of early americans' distinctive traits and the 'original entrepreneurial spirit'....

May I Quote You, General Lee: Observations and Utterances of the South's Great Generals (May I Quote You--?,)
Published in Paperback by Cumberland House (June, 1997)
Author: Randall J. Bedwell
Average review score:

outstanding
You'll love this book. It has some of Lee's most famous quotes, as well as some obscure ones.

Lee has many quotes of wisdom as well. This is entirely quotes, not a story.

I bought two copies, one for me, and one for a gift.

martha from west virginia
If you are looking for a reference book on quotes from past leaders or if you just need inspiration from these leaders, this is the book for you. My husband is in the military and he uses examples from this book frequently, along with a lesson in history that corresponds and I also have given a copy of this book to my father-in-law. He is a civil war buff and he loved my husband's book. I highly recommend this book to historians, students and people who are just interested in the civil war and the heroes of the south.

Me And Bobbi And The Gyrls
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (31 August, 2000)
Authors: George Wilkerson, George Wilkerson/Bobbi Williams, and Bobbi Lee Williams
Average review score:

An Act of Courage
People who are transgendered are among the most misunderstood and abused in our society. There is a lot of time and energy spent on condemning people who are transgendered, and little effort put into understanding or acceptance.

George Wilkerson and his female persona, Bobbi Williams, bring to life the realities of living as a transgendered person. This is a courageous book. At great personal risk, George writes about his own experiences and those of others. It's about pain, personal growth, and acceptance of self and of others. It's about the delight in expressing the part of yourself that (especially for men) is usually hidden (or forbidden). I laughed out loud at some parts of this book. Others made me weep. But all of the book helped me understand the people whom others love to hate. And accept them, as they are.

My favorite story in the book was "Looking Good," which starts as a group of the gyrls are out on the town and having a wonderful evening. Then, one of the gyrls gets a phone call from her wife to come to the hospital: the wife's father has had a stroke. The wife, forgetting that her husband is out on the town as a gyrl, begs him to come to the hospital. He (and the other gyrls) go to the hospital directly from the bar. The rest is a funny and poignant story of love and acceptance.

The most difficult story to read in the book was "One Last Story". It is a true story about a transgendered man who was murdered in Schenectady earlier this year. After reading that story, it is clear that this book represents an act of great courage.

Ideal way to bridge the gap of understanding
I'm foreign to the issue of transgendered people, with no background to understand the startling news about George and Bobbi. This book is enlightening and entertaining. I'm glad George wrote this, because he is a talented writer who makes the stories easy to step into. The stories are plausible. I can feel the conflict and the process of getting comfortable in your own skin. The chapters, "Looking Good" and "What Are You Wearing?" are my favorites. I came away with an understanding I didn't think anyone could provide.

Mediapolitik: How the Mass Media Have Transformed World Politics
Published in Paperback by Catholic Univ of Amer Pr (April, 2001)
Author: Lee Edwards
Average review score:

THE BEST TALKING ABOUT MEDIA AND POLITICS.
Anybody interested in the history of the transformation of politics using the media this is the only book to read.
Lee Edwards, in twelve chapters, explains in an extremely detailed way the reality of what has happened in certain issues in history and how the media has been involved to change the course of things.
The author gives a fine description on how the media behaves in different parts of the world and even gives great pointers on how a journalist should work.
Not many books like this have been written and I sourly doubt that there will ever be another book about Media and Politics so complete as this one.

A truly seminal work
Not often is a book published that truly is seminal, in that it introduces a definitive new way of looking at history and today. Mediapolitik is essentially the politics of the media, how media, particularly in modern times, not only reports politics but also participates in it. Using examples throughout the 20th century, Lee Edwards also is able to tell griping stories that illustrate why the liberating effects of media worked to free the eastern block, but failed in China, even after Tiananmen Square.

Argued also is that those in media must understand the power they possess, and that they must consciously adopt a philosophy to guide them to responsibility. Comprehensive, insightful, and even entertaining, this book would do well as a base text in a college course as well as enjoyable and enlightening to the casual reader. Edwards not only asks numerous questions, which in the end of this kind of research anyone could do, he actually offers some answers, although leaves which answers are best to the reader.
